The 3 Questions to Ask Yourself About Retirement

Key Takeaways

  • It’s important to get clear about what you want out of retirement ahead of your actual retirement date as there are many factors that will affect your decisions.
  • There are three simple questions you can ask yourself to help you structure what retirement will look like for you.
  • Ultimately, planning ahead for your retirement will help you transition in to this new stage of life more easily, and these three questions are a great way to start.

Retirement is a big life change for everybody. It’s important to try to get clear about it, and I recently came across an article that had three simple questions to ask yourself about what retirement is going to look like for you.

What do I want to do?

Right now, you are working about 40-60 hours a week, and that consumes most of your time. But in retirement, you will replace that time with something else. You needed to work because you had to make money, but in retirement, you move to a want situation, and you could end up doing something entirely different. It can take a year or two to figure out what you want to do, so you might want to start thinking about it now, that way you can easily transition.

What kind of life do I want to live?

This fits in with the first question because based on the kind of life you want to live, the things you end up doing with your time will make a difference. It’s important to make sure that the kind of life you want to live ties in with your purpose, and that this is addressed very clearly. Otherwise, you could end up feeling adrift during your retirement.

How important is it to have family and friends nearby?

I cannot tell you how many people retire and move somewhere else so they can be closer to family and friends. They’ve spent many years flying or driving across the country to see their loved ones, and they finally get a chance to move close by. Assuming you like your family and friends, it’s important to make sure you take geographic location in to consideration when planning your retirement so that you can have the kind of life you want.

These are three great questions that are another way to look at retirement and help you become more prepared for that next stage in life.
Until next time, enjoy. Gary
