Learn YOUR Uniqueness

Key Takeaways

  • There are three parts to the mind: IQ, affective, and conation.
  • The Kolbe profile is a way to measure conation, and shows how you naturally approach the world and how you do things.
  • There are four “modes” in a Kolbe profile, and one of these modes is what you naturally gravitate toward.
  • A Kolbe profile is a pivotal tool to use in building teams, selecting people for positions, and knowing more about yourself and how you operate.

You know how an event or experience can really define or change you? Well that happened to me in 1998 when I took a Kolbe profile, and it showed me for the first time how I like to naturally operate, which was very different from what I was doing. It was a huge change for me!

We can look back to Socrates and antiquity, and at that time, the Greeks were talking about three parts of the mind, highlighted in Plato’s Republic. The three parts include:

  1. IQ. This is your intelligence, skills, and knowledge.
  2. Affective. This is your personality, it’s your Myers-Briggs and DiSC®, it’s how you feel, your emotions and so forth.
  3. Conation. This is your natural striving instinct, how you naturally approach the world, how you do things, and you are wired this way from birth. Kolbe measures conation and The American Psychological Association says that the Kolbe profile has great validity and reliability.

How does Kolbe work? We all act in one of four modes:

  1. Fact Finder. This mode covers how you gather and share information. If your profile indicates that you are long in the Fact Finder mode, and you’re buying a car, you would do a lot of research, you check it out thoroughly and against a bunch of models, and then you would buy the car.
  2. Follow Through. This is how you arrange and design. If you are buying a car, you’ll be looking at how this is structured, the steps you would take to do this, how it would fit in to your life, and then you buy the car.
  3. Quickstart. This mode addresses risk and uncertainty. It might be that you get up one morning and by the afternoon, you’ve bought a car.
  4. Implementer. This mode is about how you deal with space and tangibles. You would go get in to the car, drive it, and have your hands all over the car before you buy it.

If left to their own devices, this is how we would see people operate in the real world. In the business world, this is really important. Many people are in jobs they don’t like, or they aren’t doing the things they love to do. Just think of the applications of this profile and of how much more productive people could be. Supervisors can select the right people for the positions they are hiring for, and teams can be more synergistic if they have the right combination of people with these modes.

Kolbe has huge applications in the workplace, and we’re seeing this shift throughout the business world with people effectively using this profile to build their teams. Knowing your profile also works at home and in other places as you can identify how your way of operating may or may not match others, and be cognizant of those differences in your interactions.

You can click here to go to the Kolbe website and take the Kolbe ATM Index, which will give you your profile. There is a cost to take the profile. You can also call them at 602-840-9770, option 3, to find out more about Kolbe.

So, until next time, enjoy. Gary
