Human Intelligence – AI 2.0 Part 1

Key Takeaways

  • Our understanding of artificial intelligence’s potential today is about as basic as our understanding of the Internet’s potential was in 1993.
  • The key to harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) is learning how to integrate it successfully into human intelligence and our daily lives.
  • While some are fearful of AI, it has many benefits to society such as cochlear implants for the deaf and other neural prosthetics.

If you were on a deserted island for the past 20 to 25 years and just came back to civilization today, it would be very hard to adjust. You wouldn’t know anything about the Internet and the myriad of things created as a result of it. Well, that type of disorientation is how a lot of us feel right now about artificial intelligence.

This post is really about something that I picked up from Peter Diamandis. Peter is the person who’s known for starting the commercial space age back in 2004, thanks mainly to his XPRIZE. What’s important to understand about AI is how we go about integrating it into our own human intelligence. It’s really very important for us to not be afraid of AI and to try to bring it into our lives proactively.

First, let’s go back to what human intelligence really is. We created the wheel in prehistoric times and then in modern days, we developed the calculator, the computer, then smart devices and finally AI.

You might be surprised to learn that AI has actually been around for a while. Think of cochlear implants for deaf people. The first implants were introduced back in 1957. Since then, more than 350,000 cochlear devices have been given to deaf people worldwide who are now able to hear.

Cochlear implants are an example of neural prosthetics. Bryan Johnson is a very successful entrepreneur who started the OS Fund specifically to help inventors and scientists develop operating systems and human systems that benefit humanity. When you look at neural prosthetics, you see coming down the line more and more examples of AI that benefits humanity.

Here at the end of 2016, we’re at the same point with AI that we were with the Internet back in 1993. How do we really bring AI into our new world and figure out how to integrate it successfully into where we think we are going? We’ll talk more about the future of AI in my next post.

Until next time, enjoy. Gary
